History Made in the Mediterranean

As the first light of dawn illuminated the French Riviera at 5:56 a.m. on 5 August 2026, Dr. Mariam Saleh Binladen and her team stood at the water’s edge in Antibes, ready for a challenge that would become part of open water swimming history.

With determination and months of preparation behind her, Dr. Binladen entered the Mediterranean Sea to attempt the historic crossing from Antibes to Cannes. Stroke after stroke, she demonstrated remarkable endurance, discipline, and courage, overcoming the distance and the ever-changing sea conditions.

Her successful crossing was more than a personal achievement it marked the first officially recognized Antibes–Cannes Open Water Crossing, establishing a new chapter in the sport. Guided by an experienced international team, the swim was completed to the highest standards of marathon swimming.
