With a career spanning several decades, Dr. Marouf is celebrated for his feats in open water swimming. His dedication to the sport extends beyond personal achievements, as he has also been instrumental in advancing the discipline through coaching and mentoring.
Dr. Marouf holds a Doctorate in Physical Education, specializing in swimming and aquatic sports. His academic background, combined with his extensive practical experience, has equipped him with a deep understanding of the technical and physiological aspects of open water swimming.
Throughout his career, Dr. Marouf has been a passionate advocate for the growth of open water swimming. He has contributed to the development of training programs and techniques that have benefited athletes at various levels. His expertise and innovative approaches have earned him respect and admiration within the swimming community.
Competitive Career & Honors
International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame (IMSHOF): Inducted in the Class of 2018 as an "Honour Swimmer." He is celebrated as one of the legendary Egyptian marathoners, following in the footsteps of greats like Abou-Heif.
World Record Holder: In 1993, he set a record for the 26.4 km Lake Zurich Marathon Swim in Switzerland (5 hours, 51 minutes, 41 seconds). As of recent records, his performance remains one of the fastest in the event's history.
Elite Marathoner: Competed extensively on the professional circuit during the 1990s and early 2000s, including six finishes at the prestigious Traversée internationale du lac St-Jean in Quebec.
Coaching & Leadership
Team Canada: Served as an open-water coach for Swimming Canada, including leading the national open-water team at major international events like the 2009 Summer Universiade.
Grassroots Development: He is credited with re-energizing the sport of open-water swimming in his native Egypt, where he worked to establish new training methods and teams, bridging the gap between pool and marathon swimming.
Club Leadership: Long-time Head Coach at Le Club de natation CALAC in LaSalle, Quebec, where he has developed numerous provincial and national-level swimmers.
Academic & Clinical Work
World Aquatics (formerly FINA) Clinician: He serves as an expert clinician and lecturer for World Aquatics, traveling globally to lead coaching clinics and development programs to standardize and improve open-water safety and performance.
Academic Background: Holds a PhD in Physical Education (Aquatic Sports). His work often focuses on the physiological demands of long-distance swimming and sports science application in the water.
He is a long-time teacher of the Long-Term Athlete Development Plan.
